Google results just show me rubbish

Recently on a hacker news topic here.. angry coders have been discussing their annoyance at google search results not giving them the answer they need and just displaying rubbish results to authority websites... Because apparently a googler said on their that high quality content doesn't always means useful.. content.... Which doesn't make the slightest bit of sense... I think though that many authority websites offer little useful content. can I just say as a noob at css and html person (i cannot even put together a proper website yet) that w3schools is of no help to me whatsoever... I once tried using a code example from them and because it was incomplete my html didn't work. also i find that i could not find the difference between class and id on w3schools i found what i was looking for much further down on the page on result 7 which explained it straight away... all 6 other big authority websites didn't bother...... Another note the formality of these website makes it boring for noobs too.... its like reading a dictionary and not a proper walk through guide which is easy to understand
